Fellow Seven Hills Foundation & Affiliate Staff,
For the past 12 years, I've met each quarter with a group of employees from across our organization. They represent frontline leaders, direct support professionals, ancillary support staff and others who want to engage in a regular dialogue about our collective work at Seven Hills. At several of these meetings, folks have asked me to send out a more personal, yet informative, update to staff; something directly from me to our 3000 employees located throughout Massachusetts and now Rhode Island. So, here it is.
Following is a brief update on a variety of activities we are now involved in throughout Seven Hills. You'll note that many of the updates are credited to varied staff and you are encouraged to contact them directly for further information. If you would like information on specific activities, please email Elena Ketnouvong at eketnouvong@sevenhills.org and I'll attempt to respond in our next Quarterly President's Update in July.
All my best,
Dr. David A. Jordan President Seven Hills Foundation & Affiliates

FEATURED STORY |
"It's the Economy and a New Architecture
of the Human Services System"
There is nothing more concerning to me at this moment than ensuring our financial health. As you all have no doubt been following, we are in the midst of a global economic readjustment which ultimately trickles down to national, state and local budgets. In the 4th quarter of 2008, the Governor of both Massachusetts and Rhode Island enacted varied forms of fiscal cutbacks for services to the disabled. Here in Massachusetts, a further round of cuts was announced in late January, but thus far they have not been fully enacted. READ MORE |

Seven Hills Behavioral Health Methadone Clinic Opens
I am pleased to report that after many months of staff planning and actual construction, our new Seven Hills Behavioral Health Methadone clinic is completed and open. This is particularly significant to me in that it truly signifies what we as an organization value; that is, promoting dignity and respect for all people regardless of their physical or mental condition. The new clinic replaces the antiquated facility we inherited when we took over the Center for Human Services agency three years ago. In the brief time we have been open, our daily enrollment has skyrocketed to 650 patients per day. In the late Spring we will be holding a formal dedication of the facility for directors, staff, local and state officials, and those we serve who are in recovery from throughout southeast Massachusetts.
New Vice President of SHBH Appointment
Additionally, I am very pleased to publicly announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Carl as my selection for Vice President/COO of Seven Hills Behavioral Health. With the depature of Gouri Datta, MD nearly a year ago, I have left this position unfilled while the day-to-day management has been in the able hands of our 2 Assistant Vice Presidents at SHBH; Jo-Anne Newton, AVP for Operations and Karen Blanchette, AVP for Clinical Services. Seven Hills Goes 'Global'
In response to the needs of our own growing number of international employees- and the clinical desperation of many children and adults in need of care in those countries reflected in our own Seven Hills staff- we began on October 1, 2008 a new affiliate called 'Seven Hills Global Outreach, Inc. (SHGO). Currently coordinated by our Diversity Committee Chair and HR Office staffer, James Muiruri, this nascent affiliate has begun to reach out to the needs of others beyond our shores. READ MORE
Seven Hills Pediatric Center Garners "Best Nursing Home in America" status (U.S. News & World Report, 3/11/09) Of the 15,000+ nursing facilities newly ranked by the U.S. News & World Report, only 27 merited their "honor role" status in the first version of "Americas Best Nursing Homes". "All 27 garnered a perfect 5 stars in each of the four yardsticks the federal government applies to nursing homes: overall rating, health inspections, nursing staff, and quality measures of individual care" (U.S. News).
My congratulations are extended to Holly Jarek, Vice President of SHPC, and our entire staff at our Groton site for the excellence in care offered to those medically fragile children and young adults we serve. As you may know, we assumed responsibility of SHPC five years ago from Children's Hospital/Boston.
Children's Aid & Family Service "Child Enrichment Center" Under Construction Each morning on my to the Worcester office, from my home in New Hampshire, I turn a corner at the intersection of Ashby Road and John Fitch Highway in Fitchburg. As I turn I generally pull over to view the construction currently underway at our long anticipated CAFS Child Enrichment Center. This new facility will soon be the home to over 85 children, as young as 1 year old, who generally come from low income families, in our CAFS daycare program. READ MORE |

| SUMMARY |
The above represent selected highlights of the many and varied activities currently underway throughout our incredible organization. These are challenging times, yet I can foresee a pathway through the chaos where Seven Hills Foundation will emerge even stronger, more nimble, and a more pioneering entity than it is today. I am realistic and focused concerning the present and concurrently mindful that the ebb and flow of our work and our "systems" are cyclical. Our intent is to be prepared for the incredible up-cycle when and where it takes place. Dr. David A. Jordan President/CEO

Staff Suggestion: Several staff have suggested that we establish a staff networking page on www.sevenhillsstaff.org. This would be a site for staff to share information that might be interesting/helpful to other staff. Some of the content categories that have been suggested include: Hints on how Seven Hills can save money, how staff can save money in their personal lives, vacation recommendations with videos/photos and classes/courses that staff have found useful. The content has to benefit other staff so no wedding pictures, graduation announcements, etc. Also, this would not be a replacement for CraigsList so no selling of items would be included.
We are interested in hearing your thoughts on this possible site as well as content suggestions. Email your comments and ideas to jmccormack@sevenhills.org.
Cell Phone Update: Staff have been doing a great job at reducing our monthly cel phone bill. Here is another suggestioin. Last month we spent almost $200 on 411 calls ($1.98 each). Google offers a free service at 1-800-4664-411. Thanks to Ron Tanguay (Homestead) and Mike LaTour (Foundation) for the idea. March 16, 2009
Safety First Program Update: For the past seven years Seven Hills has participated in the Safety First Driving Program. You are probably most familiar with this program through the Safety First stickers on Seven Hills owned vehicles. The purpose of this program is to assure our employees safely operate vehicles transporting the people we support. Here is how the program operates. When a member of the public observes one of our vehicles being operated in an unsafe manner they can contact the Safety First company via a toll-free number on the van sticker and file a report. A report is then sent to Seven Hills for action. Staff identified as driving in an unsafe manner receive special safety materials and instruction from their supervisor. In some cases, staff are required to take the Driver Awareness training again.
During 2008 we received 65 reports of unsafe driving (slightly up from 2007). Thus far in 2009 the number of reports is consistent with the 2008 numbers. The most common offenses reported are improper lane change, not signaling when turning and cutting other drivers off. Please remind your drivers to always use their turn signals and to double check that they have enough room when changing lanes. Lets drive even more safely and reduce the number of reports in 2009. March 12, 2009
Staff Reduce Cell Phone Bill by $700 in One Month. Just one month into our program to reduce cell phones costs staff with Seven Hills provided devices have lowered the February bill by over $700 (as compared to January). As a special incentive to keep up the good work many staff (especially those that have reduced their bills) will be receiving upgraded cell phones over the next month. Mike Latour, IT Associate and Cell Phone Program Manager has arranged a special deal with Sprint by will each new upgraded phone will cost Seven Hills less than a dollar.
Health Insurance Announcement: We are pleased to announce that we have selected Fallon Community Health Plan as our health insurance carrier effective March 1, 2009. Changing health insurance carriers will allow us to maintain the same level of health insurance benefits without a significant cost increase to our employees. All benefits eligible employees, including those currently enrolled in the Tufts health insurance plan or those enrolling for the first time, must complete a Fallon enrollment form or risk losing their health insurance coverage. It is also open enrollment for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). To obtain information about your health insurance benefits, please contact the Human Resources Office at 508-755-2340 ext. 227.
Seven Hills Cell Phones: Over the past few months the cost of cell phone usage at Seven Hills has been increasing substantially. Over the next few months we will be looking at various ways to reduce our monthly charges. Here are two reminders that may help you to assist us in our cost saving efforts: 1. Calls from one Sprint phone to another Sprint phone are free. Calls from a Sprint phone to a landline cost minutes. For example, if you’re an Area Director calling a Residence Director please call them on their cell phone. 2. For most plans, calls after 7 pm and on weekends are free. Thank you for your assistance.
